Description: In the early 2000s, Marvel was struggling. The company had filed for bankruptcy in the 1990s and was trying to survive by licensing its popular characters like Spider-Man and X-Men to other studios. But they had lost control of their biggest heroes and needed a way to take back creative power—and make money fast. So Marvel took a big risk. They decided to make their own movies, starting with a character most people didn’t know well: Iron Man. They had no studio backing, no guaranteed audience, and chose Robert Downey Jr., a controversial actor at the time, to play the lead. Many thought it would fail. But in 2008, Iron Man was a massive hit. It made hundreds of millions of dollars and proved that Marvel could succeed on its own. The film launched the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), which would go on to earn billions. Iron Man didn’t just fly on screen—he lifted Marvel out of debt and helped turn it into one of the biggest entertainment companies in the world. What started as a desperate gamble became a legendary success. Without Iron Man, there may have never been an Avengers, or a Marvel Studios at all.
