Description: The Barbados threadsnake is the smallest snake in the world. It grows to only about 4 inches long and is as thin as a piece of spaghetti. Many people mistake it for a worm because of its tiny size and smooth body. It is found only on the island of Barbados in the Caribbean. This snake lives underground and is rarely seen. It feeds mostly on small insects like ants and termites. It lays just one egg at a time, and the baby snake is already half the size of the adult when it hatches. Because of its secretive lifestyle, people can go years without spotting one. For a long time, scientists thought the Barbados threadsnake might be extinct. It had not been seen for almost 20 years. But in early 2025, researchers found one under a rock while exploring forests in Barbados. This was an exciting discovery that gave hope for the species. Even though it was found again, the snake is still in danger. Most of its natural forest habitat has been destroyed. To keep this tiny snake alive, more needs to be done to protect the forests where it lives. Otherwise, it could disappear again—this time for good.
