Episode Title: YouTube, Whatsapp & EVERY Social Media BANNED in Nepal! Why? #shorts
Produced by: FactTechz
Description: The Government of Nepal announced a sudden ban on many of the world’s biggest social media and messaging platforms. Services like Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, WhatsApp, Twitter (now called X), LinkedIn, and Snapchat were all blocked. In total, 26 popular platforms went offline for users in the country. The government explained that the ban came because these companies failed to register with Nepal’s Ministry of Communication and Information Technology. The rules required them to appoint a local representative, create a system for handling complaints, and follow certain self-regulation standards. Since the companies did not comply, the telecommunications authority was ordered to cut access. Interestingly, not every app was banned. Platforms like TikTok, Viber, and a few others that had already registered with the government are still available. Officials have said that the blocked platforms can come back once they finish the registration process. The move followed a directive from Nepal’s Supreme Court, which pushed for stronger regulation of online platforms. The government argues this will help fight cybercrime, misinformation, and security risks. However, critics worry that the ban limits free expression and could be used as a form of censorship.
