Description: Charles Ingram is a former British Army major who became famous for cheating on the TV quiz show “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?” in the United Kingdom. His story became one of the most talked-about scandals in British television history. In 2001, Ingram appeared on the show and went on to win the top prize of £1 million. At first, it looked like an incredible comeback — he had struggled with many questions but somehow kept choosing the right answers in the later rounds. However, after the episode was recorded, the producers grew suspicious of how he was answering. An investigation found that Ingram’s wife, Diana, and another contestant, Tecwen Whittock, had helped him cheat by using a system of coughs. Whenever the host read out the answer options, Whittock (who was sitting in the audience) would cough when the correct answer was mentioned. Ingram used these coughs as signals to choose the right answers. Before the episode could even be broadcast, the show’s team confronted Ingram, and his winnings were never paid. Later, all three — Charles Ingram, his wife Diana, and Tecwen Whittock — were found guilty of fraud in court in 2003. They were given suspended prison sentences and fined. Since then, the story has been retold many times in documentaries, books, and even a TV drama series called “Quiz”. Charles Ingram has always claimed that he was innocent and that the coughing was a coincidence, but most people still see the case as one of the most famous examples of cheating on a game show.
