Description: Airbus discovered a critical issue in the flight-control system used in A320-family aircraft. These planes rely on multiple flight-control computers, one of which is called the ELAC system. Under rare conditions, especially during periods of intense solar activity, this computer could experience data corruption. When that happens, the aircraft might briefly make unexpected control movements, such as a sudden dip or roll, even while the autopilot is on. The problem became urgent after a real in-flight incident involving an A320 operated by JetBlue. The plane suddenly dropped altitude without any pilot command, although the crew quickly stabilized it and landed safely. Investigators traced the issue to the ELAC computer, and regulators immediately demanded checks and fixes across the global A320 fleet. As a result, Airbus instructed airlines worldwide to update the software on roughly 6,000 A320-family aircraft. For most planes, the fix was a straightforward software patch that takes only a few hours to install. A smaller number of older aircraft need hardware replacements instead, which causes longer grounding. Airlines briefly faced cancellations and delays while updates were completed, but most planes were fixed quickly. Around the same time, Airbus also discovered an unrelated manufacturing quality issue involving fuselage panels on some newly built A320 aircraft. This required inspections and caused production delays, adding to the overall strain on airlines and the manufacturer. However, Airbus stated that the panel issue is contained and is not connected to the flight-control problem. Subscribe for more educational content and unlock knowledge every day with FactTechz!
