When these organisms died, they were buried under layers of mud and rock. Over millions of years, heat and pressure transformed their remains into fossil fuels. People sometimes say dinosaurs created fossil fuels, but in reality most oil and gas came from ancient bacteria, algae, and marine life, while coal mainly formed from ancient forests. This is why fossil fuels contain so much stored energy. They are basically millions of years of sunlight captured by ancient life and compressed inside the Earth.
