Description: Portion of the Vikramshila Setu in Bhagalpur, Bihar collapsed. A part of the bridge suddenly broke and fell into the Ganga River. A slab near pillar number 133 gave way and sank into the river. This bridge is extremely important because it connects Bhagalpur with Naugachhia and many districts of north Bihar, serving as a major transport lifeline. When the section collapsed, the bridge was effectively split, and all traffic was immediately stopped from both sides to prevent any incident. Fortunately, there was no loss of life. This is because local police and administration acted quickly after noticing structural problems earlier in the night. They cleared vehicles and people from the affected portion just before the slab collapsed, which prevented a major disaster. However, the impact on daily life has been serious. With the bridge closed, connectivity between north and south Bihar has been disrupted, forcing people to take long alternate routes or depend on boats to cross the river. In some cases, people now have to travel 100 km extra or spend hours instead of minutes to reach their destination. Initial reports suggest that the collapse may be linked to structural weakness and lack of maintenance. The bridge was built in 2001 and has been under heavy traffic pressure for years. There were already warnings about damage to parts of the structure, including weakening around pillars, but repairs may not have been done in time. After the incident, the Bihar government ordered an investigation and immediate repair work. Authorities are also arranging alternative transport like boats and planning restoration, with estimates suggesting that repairs could take weeks or even months. Subscribe to FactTechz
