The breakthrough marks another significant step in the country's long-term effort to generate electricity through controlled nuclear fusion, a technology widely considered the future of clean energy. The newly completed toroidal-field superconducting magnet weighs an enormous 582 tonnes and measures about 21 metres in length, making it the largest magnet ever built for a controlled fusion reactor. Developed by the Institute of Plasma Physics under the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Hefei, the magnet has successfully passed its final acceptance and full-parameter tests. The magnet plays a crucial role in China's fusion programme by generating extremely powerful magnetic fields capable of confining plasma heated to more than 100 million degrees Celsius—over six times hotter than the Sun's core. These magnetic fields prevent the superheated plasma from touching the reactor walls, allowing scientists to sustain the fusion process safely. Scientists believe nuclear fusion could provide an almost unlimited source of carbon-free electricity by combining hydrogen atoms in the same way the Sun produces energy. Unlike conventional nuclear power, fusion does not produce long-lived radioactive waste and carries a much lower risk of catastrophic accidents. China hopes the new magnet will support the development of its next-generation fusion reactor, with the country targeting major advances in commercial fusion power around 2030. The achievement also strengthens China's position in the global race for fusion energy, alongside major international projects such as ITER in France and similar research programmes in the United States, Europe and Japan.
