Description: Delhi has completed the planned expansion of its Atal Canteen programme, taking the total number of subsidised food centres in the national capital to 100. The latest phase added 25 canteens, inaugurated on August 16 to mark the death anniversary of former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the government had achieved its target within approximately eight months. The programme began in December 2025 with 45 centres and was subsequently expanded in phases across different parts of Delhi. Each Atal Canteen provides a cooked meal for a symbolic payment of ₹5. The typical plate includes items such as dal, rice, roti and seasonal vegetables. Meals are generally served twice daily, with the network designed to provide food to around one lakh people every day. The initiative primarily supports daily-wage labourers, construction workers, rickshaw drivers, sanitation workers, students, slum residents and other people who may struggle to afford regular nutritious meals. Each canteen can reportedly distribute approximately 1,000 plates daily. The centres are managed through the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board. Digital token systems and CCTV monitoring are being used to track meal distribution, reduce misuse and maintain operational transparency. The government provides a subsidy so operators can serve meals at the ₹5 price. Officials have described the scheme as an effort to address urban hunger while allowing beneficiaries to obtain food with dignity.
