Description: Ram Mandir Donation Theft Row Renews Debate Over Transparency of Temple Trust The alleged theft of donations meant for the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya has reignited a wider debate over transparency and accountability in the management of one of India's most prominent religious trusts. The controversy began after allegations surfaced that donations offered by devotees had been misappropriated, leading to multiple arrests and an investigation by a Special Investigation Team (SIT). The Supreme Court has also stepped in, seeking status reports from both the Uttar Pradesh government and the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust while monitoring the progress of the probe. The case has also drawn attention to the legal status of the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust. Unlike government departments or statutory bodies, the Trust is not currently treated as a "public authority" under the Right to Information (RTI) Act. In 2025, the Central Information Commission held that the Trust does not fall under the RTI Act, meaning citizens cannot use RTI applications to seek details about its finances or administration. Following the donation theft allegations, several political leaders and civil society voices have argued that trusts handling donations worth hundreds or thousands of crores should be brought under greater public scrutiny. A CPI(M) MP has urged the Centre to reconsider the Trust's RTI status, arguing that greater transparency would strengthen public confidence rather than weaken it. At the same time, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has cautioned against blaming the entire Trust for the actions of a few individuals. According to the SIT's preliminary findings, evidence has so far been found against only a limited number of accused, and the government says legal action is being taken while new safeguards for donation counting have already been introduced. These include tighter monitoring, digital tracking and stricter procedures for handling offerings. Subscribe to FactTechz
