Scientists say a large section of unstable glacier, rock and mountain debris fell into the upper Lhende river system. The avalanche displaced water and deposited enormous quantities of material across the river channel, creating a temporary blockage. Water continued accumulating behind this natural barrier until it could no longer withstand the pressure. When the debris dam failed, the stored water surged downstream together with mud, boulders and ice. This created a fast-moving debris flow that witnesses compared to liquid concrete. The torrent travelled through the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli river systems, destroying settlements, roads, bridges and border infrastructure. Hundreds of people have been confirmed dead, while many others—including foreign tourists and pilgrims—remain missing. Rescue operations have been complicated by damaged roads, unstable slopes and difficult mountain weather. [Latest disaster report] The river blockage was therefore an important part of the flood mechanism, but it was not the original trigger. The disaster began with the collapse of glacier ice and surrounding rock. The temporary dam then stored and suddenly released water, greatly increasing the flood’s destructive force. Officials are also monitoring another lake that formed behind fresh debris after the disaster. If that barrier fails, it could generate a secondary flood downstream. Researchers say rapidly warming Himalayan conditions are destabilising glaciers, thawing frozen mountain ground and increasing the probability of avalanches, landslides and glacial-lake outburst floods.
