Its long-term plans include surface habitats, scientific equipment, lunar vehicles and supporting infrastructure, particularly near the Moon’s south polar region. However, reports saying India has simply been “invited onto an Artemis mission” need clarification. NASA has invited ISRO to discuss participation in the broader Moon Base programme. No Indian astronaut has yet been publicly assigned to a particular Artemis flight, and no specific Indian module, landing date or financial commitment has been announced. India was already connected to the Artemis framework before this invitation. It signed the Artemis Accords in June 2023. The accords are non-binding principles for peaceful and responsible space exploration; signing them does not automatically provide a seat on a NASA spacecraft or membership in every Artemis mission. India is attractive as a lunar partner because of its growing space capabilities. Chandrayaan-3 made India the first country to achieve a soft landing in the Moon’s south-polar region in 2023. ISRO is also developing Gaganyaan, India’s independent human-spaceflight programme. NASA and ISRO already cooperate on the NISAR Earth-observation satellite, while Indian astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla’s International Space Station mission strengthened experience in human spaceflight. The two agencies have also agreed to continue discussions about openly sharing scientific data. In simple terms, the United States has offered India a place in discussions and possible collaboration on a future lunar base.
