Description: Indian Railways’ record-setting freight train “Rudrastra” has attracted renewed attention online, although the achievement originally took place in August 2025. The experimental train was described by railway officials as India’s longest-ever freight formation and one of the longest operated in Asia. Rudrastra measured approximately 4.5 kilometres—long enough to stretch across several railway stations. It was created by coupling six conventional freight rakes, producing a formation of 354 wagons. Seven powerful locomotives were positioned at different points to distribute pulling and braking power across the unusually long train. The trial was conducted by the Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Division of East Central Railway. Rudrastra travelled from Ganjkhwaja station in Uttar Pradesh towards Garhwa in Jharkhand, covering roughly 209 kilometres in slightly more than five hours. Its average speed was approximately 40.5 kilometres per hour. Each wagon was reportedly capable of carrying around 72 tonnes of cargo. Combining several regular freight trains into one large formation can transport more material in a single movement, reduce congestion on busy railway routes and improve the use of locomotives, crews and track capacity. However, operating a train of this size requires careful coordination. Railway teams must manage braking distances, signalling, track clearances and the distribution of locomotives throughout the formation. Rudrastra was developed primarily as a freight-efficiency experiment, not as a regular passenger service.
