Description: Iranian Rial Falls Beyond Two Million per Dollar as Sanctions Intensify Iran’s currency has fallen to a historic low, with one US dollar trading at approximately 2.02 million rials on Tehran’s open market on August 24. The country’s central bank listed a stronger official rate of around 1.5 million rials per dollar, but ordinary citizens and many businesses often depend on the more expensive unofficial market. The latest decline followed an expansion of American sanctions targeting Iran’s oil revenue, shipping operations, financial intermediaries and sanctions-evasion networks. Washington says these networks use exchange houses, shell companies, gold and cryptocurrencies to move money internationally. Sanctions weaken the rial by restricting oil sales and making it harder for Iran to receive export payments in widely accepted foreign currencies. With fewer dollars entering the economy, demand for them rises among importers and citizens attempting to protect their savings. However, sanctions are not the only reason for the currency crisis. High inflation, rapid growth in the money supply, government budget pressures, regional conflict and uncertainty about Iran’s economic future have also damaged confidence. A weaker rial makes imported food, medicine, machinery and raw materials more expensive. Businesses then pass higher costs to consumers, producing further inflation and encouraging more people to purchase dollars or gold. Iran maintains several exchange rates for different purposes, making direct comparisons difficult. Nevertheless, the open-market rate provides a clearer picture of the financial pressure experienced by households and private businesses. Subscribe to FactTechz
