Russian Deputy Prime Minister Marat Khusnullin said a rail connection towards the Indian Ocean should be explored as Moscow searches for alternatives to vulnerable maritime routes, particularly the Strait of Hormuz and the Bosphorus. He suggested possible corridors involving Turkmenistan, Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan, saying routes that provide access to India should be considered. The proposal is particularly significant for India-Russia trade. India imports large quantities of Russian crude oil, coal, fertilisers and other commodities, while both countries have been trying to improve transport connectivity and reduce shipping time. This is not entirely a new idea. Russia and India are already connected commercially through the International North-South Transport Corridor, which combines rail, road and sea transportation. In 2024, Russia even dispatched coal-loaded trains towards India through the corridor, with the cargo travelling by rail through Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Iran before being shipped from Bandar Abbas.
