Description: DoT orders strict enforcement of nine-SIM limit India’s Department of Telecommunications has directed mobile operators to strictly enforce the maximum number of connections that one person can hold. From August 24, 2026, customers who have already reached the permitted limit must be denied any additional SIM card. Most Indian subscribers can hold up to nine mobile connections in their name. A lower ceiling of six applies in Jammu and Kashmir, Assam and the North-Eastern states. The total includes connections obtained from every operator and across different telecom service areas, rather than nine connections from each company. The restriction itself is not new. The latest circular introduces stronger technical checks to stop customers from bypassing it by approaching another operator. Telecom companies will use the Department’s Digital Intelligence Platform, which combines subscriber information submitted by different networks. From August 23, representative photographs of customers who have reached the limit will be made available through the system. Operators must eventually integrate their systems with the platform for faster verification. Applicants will also be required to declare connections already registered in their name when completing the customer application form. People with more than the permitted number should not assume that every connection will automatically stop on August 24. However, excess numbers may be reviewed and could be disconnected or surrendered under existing procedures. Subscribe to FactTechz
