Online discussions had increasingly connected India’s space-sector reforms with industrialists such as Mukesh Ambani and Gautam Adani, leading some users to claim that private businesses might eventually “buy” ISRO. However, no such sale has been announced. ISRO operates under the Government of India’s Department of Space and will remain a public institution. ISRO Chairman V. Narayanan said the organisation is not being privatised and continues to work with government funding. The clarification followed concerns raised by employee associations about transferring some manufacturing and operational activities to outside companies. The government has encouraged private participation in space activities since opening the sector in 2020. Companies and public-sector enterprises can now manufacture established launch vehicles, routine satellites and other mature systems using technology developed by ISRO. This arrangement does not mean that a company will own ISRO. Instead, industry will handle more large-scale and repetitive production, allowing ISRO’s scientists to concentrate on advanced research, human spaceflight, next-generation rockets, planetary exploration and strategic national missions. A Hindustan Aeronautics Limited and Larsen & Toubro consortium is already producing PSLV rockets, while SSLV technology has also been transferred to HAL. Around 450 industries currently support ISRO’s programmes. ISRO stated that it will remain India’s principal organisation for advanced space research and that its importance will not be diminished.
