Description: UPI Tap & Pay Lets Indians Pay Without Scanning a QR Code India has introduced UPI Tap & Pay, a contactless payment facility that allows users to pay merchants by tapping their smartphones instead of scanning a QR code. The National Payments Corporation of India unveiled the feature at the Global Fintech Fest 2026 in Mumbai. It uses near-field communication, or NFC—the same short-range wireless technology used by contactless bank cards and mobile wallets. To make a payment, a customer unlocks an NFC-enabled phone and taps it against a compatible point-of-sale terminal, merchant soundbox or UPI tag. Payment information is exchanged automatically, reducing the need to open the camera, scan a code and manually enter the receiver’s details. Depending on the UPI application and payment method, users may still need to confirm the amount and authenticate the transaction using a UPI PIN or biometric verification. Small payments made through UPI Lite can be completed more quickly and may also work with limited or no mobile internet after offline payments have been activated. The service will initially depend on support from individual UPI applications, banks and merchants. It also requires an NFC-compatible smartphone and receiving device, meaning customers cannot use it at every QR-code location immediately. The launch places UPI in more direct competition with card-based contactless services and mobile wallets, including Apple Pay, which is expected to receive a broader Indian rollout. UPI processed 24.51 billion transactions worth ₹29.82 trillion in August 2026 alone. Tap & Pay could make the system faster at supermarkets, restaurants, petrol stations and crowded retail counters, where repeatedly scanning QR codes can slow transactions. QR-code payments will continue to operate normally. Tap & Pay is an additional method rather than a replacement, giving customers a quicker option wherever compatible NFC infrastructure is available.
