Description: Kalka–Shimla Railway Track Left Hanging After Heavy Rain A section of the historic Kalka–Shimla railway line was left suspended in mid-air after heavy rainfall washed away the soil and supporting structure beneath it in Himachal Pradesh’s Solan district. The damage occurred late on August 29 near Bridge No. 57, between the Koti and Gumman–Taksal section. A sudden increase in water flowing through a culvert eroded the surrounding earth and weakened the structure supporting the narrow-gauge track. Images of the unsupported rails quickly spread online, with some viewers describing the track as bent, floating or strangely constructed. However, it was not designed that way. The rails and sleepers remained connected while the ground and part of the culvert underneath them were washed away, creating the unusual appearance. Northern Railway suspended services on the UNESCO World Heritage route to prevent an accident. Ten toy-train services—five in each direction—were cancelled. Four incoming trains were also stopped before reaching the damaged section. At least 391 passengers and 40 railway employees were safely evacuated. Five buses and two smaller passenger vehicles transported them from Solan, Koti and Dharampur towards Kalka. Railway engineering teams reached the location and began assessing the culvert, foundation and surrounding slope. Initial reports suggested that restoration could require two to three days, although services can resume only after repairs, track alignment checks and safety inspections are completed.
