Officials explained that flooding can wash fish out of rivers, ponds, lakes and reservoirs and carry them over long distances. During this journey, the fish may remain in water contaminated by sewage, chemicals, dead animals, decomposing material or human remains. Such exposure can introduce harmful bacteria, viruses, fungi and toxins. The principal concern is contamination and the inability of residents to identify unfamiliar fish or determine whether they are safe for consumption. Authorities have asked people to avoid fish caught directly from floodwater until conditions stabilise. Unknown or abnormal-looking specimens should be reported to district fisheries officials rather than eaten or sold. Anyone experiencing vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach pain, dizziness, breathing difficulty or another unusual symptom after consuming flood-caught fish should seek medical assistance immediately.
