Description: Indian Citizens Shocked As Bank Unions Warn of Indefinite Strike Over Five-Day Workweek Delay Banking services across India could face major disruption after the United Forum of Bank Unions announced a phased nationwide strike over the delayed introduction of a five-day working week and changes to the performance-linked incentive system. The UFBU has called a one-day strike for September 11, followed by a three-day stoppage from September 28 to 30. If the disputes remain unresolved, the unions plan to begin an indefinite strike on October 26. The forum represents employees and officers working in public-sector, private, foreign, regional rural and cooperative banks. Physical branch services, cash deposits, cheque processing and some administrative work could be affected. ATMs, UPI, mobile banking and online transfers are generally expected to remain available, although cash replenishment and back-office operations could experience delays during a prolonged strike. Bank employees currently receive holidays on the second and fourth Saturdays. Under the settlement signed with the Indian Banks’ Association on March 8, 2024, all Saturdays would become holidays. Employees agreed to work an additional 40 minutes from Monday to Friday, meaning customer-service hours would not be reduced. However, the old proposal still requires government approval and an official notification, and that is their main demand right now this year. The dispute is not limited to working days. Unions are also opposing a revised incentive scheme for senior officers, describing it as discriminatory and inconsistent with an earlier bilateral settlement. The matter is reportedly pending before the Delhi High Court and the Chief Labour Commissioner. The indefinite strike is therefore a formal escalation plan, not an action already underway. Negotiations could still result in postponement or withdrawal. Customers should monitor announcements from their banks and complete time-sensitive branch transactions before the scheduled September strikes. Subscribe to FactTechz
