Known as the Indian Ocean Geoid Low, the anomaly covers approximately three million square kilometres. Its centre lies southwest of India, where the geoid—an imaginary surface representing Earth’s gravitational shape—falls as much as 106 metres below the reference level used by scientists. Earth’s gravity is not perfectly uniform because mass is distributed unevenly inside the planet. Denser underground material produces a slightly stronger pull, while less-dense regions create weaker gravity. A person or object within the Indian Ocean Geoid Low would consequently weigh fractionally less, although the difference would be too small to notice without precise instruments. Researchers from the Indian Institute of Science used seismic information and computer simulations to investigate its origin. Their modelling suggests that ancient pieces of the Tethys Ocean’s crust sank deep into Earth’s mantle as the Indian tectonic plate moved northward. This movement may have displaced extremely hot, relatively low-density material beneath Africa, creating mantle plumes below the Indian Ocean. These deep-Earth structures reduced the amount of mass beneath the region and produced the gravitational low visible today. Scientists estimate that the anomaly may have formed around 20 million years ago and could remain for millions more. However, the proposed explanation is still being studied and is not considered the final answer. The gravity low poses no known threat to ships, aircraft or coastal communities. Its importance is scientific: it offers researchers a rare opportunity to understand Earth’s interior, ancient plate movements and the processes continuously reshaping the planet’s gravitational field.
