However, officials and construction experts say the material shown in several such clips is GFRP rebar, an engineered construction product—not ordinary plastic. GFRP stands for Glass Fibre Reinforced Polymer. It is manufactured by binding strong glass fibres inside a polymer resin. The finished rods may look and feel different from steel and are considerably lighter. They can also break differently when struck or bent, which has led some video creators to incorrectly present them as cheap plastic pipes. The rods have important engineering advantages. They do not rust, conduct electricity or interfere with magnetic fields. Their corrosion resistance can make them useful in concrete crash barriers, drainage structures, bridges, coastal projects and locations exposed to water or road salt. GFRP also has high tensile strength along the direction of its fibres. However, this does not mean it is automatically superior to steel in every situation. It has different stiffness, bending and fire-performance characteristics, and it generally cannot be reshaped at a construction site like conventional steel rebar. Engineers must therefore design structures specifically for its properties and use certified material of the required grade. The viral claims have also confused GFRP reinforcement with “plastic roads.” The latter usually refers to road-building methods that incorporate processed waste plastic into bitumen or use plastic-based geocells. GFRP rods serve a different purpose: reinforcing concrete components. The appearance of a non-metallic rod alone is consequently not proof of corruption or unsafe construction. Citizens should check project specifications, certification and laboratory-test records before reaching conclusions.
