Description: Ujjain’s “Unmovable” Hanuman Idol Draws Faith and Scientific Curiosity An ancient Hanuman idol in Ujjain has become the centre of national attention after repeated attempts to relocate it during road-widening work reportedly failed. The Khade Hanuman temple stands near Sati Gate on the Kanthal–Chhatri Chowk route, which is being widened in preparation for the 2028 Simhastha gathering. Municipal workers dismantled the surrounding temple structure, but the approximately eight-foot standing idol remained at its original location despite efforts involving heavy equipment. Videos of the incident spread rapidly online. Devotees described the idol’s refusal to move as a divine sign, while the reported arrival of numerous monkeys near the site added to its spiritual interpretation. The Ujjain administration has now said the idol will not be relocated without the agreement of religious representatives and a scientific examination. It remains protected beneath a temporary covering while specialists study its construction, age and underground structure. Some reports suggest the idol was carved from basalt, a dense volcanic rock commonly found across the Malwa region. Basalt forms when lava cools and solidifies. Its closely packed mineral structure makes it strong, heavy and resistant to weathering, which explains why it has historically been used for statues and buildings. But basalt alone cannot explain why an idol cannot be moved. One possibility is that only its visible portion stands above ground while a substantial lower section remains embedded in the soil or attached to a deep stone base. It may even form part of a larger continuous rock mass. Ground settlement and centuries of bonding around the foundation could further increase resistance. The temple is popularly described as approximately 170 years old, while claims connecting the idol to the much earlier Paramara period remain unverified. For now, authorities have paused further action, leaving faith and geology together at the centre of the mystery. Subscribe to FactTechz
