Description: India’s Estimated Literacy Rate Reaches 80.9 Percent, Marking Major Progress India’s literacy rate is estimated to have reached 80.9 percent among people aged seven years and above, according to data from the Periodic Labour Force Survey for 2023–24. The figure has recently received renewed attention online, with many Indians celebrating the country’s progress since Independence. India’s literacy rate was only about 18.3 percent in the 1951 Census, meaning fewer than one in five citizens could read and write at that time. By the 2011 Census, the rate had increased to approximately 74 percent. The latest PLFS estimate indicates that more than four out of every five Indians aged seven or older are now literate. However, the 80.9 percent figure is a survey-based estimate and should not be confused with a new national Census result. India’s next comprehensive population enumeration will provide a more detailed picture of literacy levels across districts, communities and age groups. The PLFS data also reveals continuing inequalities. Urban literacy is approximately 90 percent, compared with about 77 percent in rural India. Male literacy remains higher than female literacy, showing that access to education is still uneven. The long-term rise reflects expanded school access, adult-literacy campaigns, improved enrolment and increasing public awareness about education. Nevertheless, literacy does not automatically guarantee learning quality. Education experts say India’s next challenge is ensuring that people counted as literate can understand written information, perform basic calculations and use those skills effectively in everyday life.
