Meanwhile, Trump told Fox News that he would accept Chinese automakers establishing factories inside the United States. “If China wanted to come in and open a plant to build their cars here, I’d be okay with that,” he said, adding that the important condition would be employing American workers. Trump opposed Chinese companies manufacturing vehicles in Mexico and exporting them into the US. His statement nevertheless surprised American automakers and lawmakers, who fear that heavily subsidised Chinese electric-vehicle manufacturers could challenge domestic companies and create national-security concerns through connected software. The developments reveal an interesting shift in global economics. While BRICS countries are building closer alternatives to Western-dominated systems, Washington is signalling that Chinese investment may be acceptable when production, employment and taxation remain inside America.
