In Hindu tradition, Nataraja represents Shiva performing the cosmic dance. The imagery is commonly interpreted as the continuous cycle of creation, preservation, transformation and destruction. A ring of flames surrounds the dancing figure, while Shiva stands over a figure representing ignorance. The symbolism has been compared with activity at CERN’s Large Hadron Collider. Inside the accelerator, particles travel close to the speed of light before colliding. Energy released during these collisions can produce new particles. Many exist for extremely short periods before decaying into other particles. Nothing is created from nothing or simply disappears; energy, momentum, electric charge and other conserved quantities must remain balanced. The plaque beside the statue refers to the writings of physicist and author Fritjof Capra, who used Shiva’s dance as a metaphor for the continuous movement and transformation of subatomic matter. Scientists and writers, including Carl Sagan, have also discussed the philosophical parallel.
