The programme encourages travellers to submit complaints through NHAI’s Rajmargyatra mobile application. Users must upload a clear, geo-tagged and time-stamped photograph of an unclean toilet, along with the required location, vehicle and FASTag information. The scheme applies specifically to eligible toilets maintained by NHAI, generally at toll plazas and designated highway facilities. Toilets at petrol pumps, restaurants, private establishments, state highways or facilities managed by other agencies are not covered. A participant is generally allowed to receive the incentive only once during the campaign. Duplicate photographs, previously captured images, unclear submissions and complaints concerning facilities outside NHAI’s control may be rejected. The reward is not paid as cash. Once a complaint is validated, ₹1,000 is credited to the FASTag account connected with the vehicle details supplied by the participant. NHAI introduced the challenge to involve motorists in monitoring sanitation and to make maintenance contractors more accountable. Contractors responsible for repeatedly unhygienic facilities may also face financial penalties under applicable maintenance provisions. The campaign offers travellers a direct way to report neglected infrastructure, but its effectiveness will depend on timely verification, corrective action, reliable water supplies and regular cleaning—not merely the number of photographs submitted.
