Viral footage showed powerful water and debris surrounding the building while several people sheltered on an upper-floor balcony. Floodwater entered the ground floor and reportedly tore away doors and windows, but the main structure did not collapse. Later footage indicated that the occupants survived and that the house remained largely intact. Social-media explanations have credited reinforced cement concrete, or RCC, for the building’s survival. An RCC structure uses steel reinforcement inside concrete. Concrete performs well under compression, while steel helps resist pulling, bending and sideways forces. When foundations, columns, beams and floor slabs are properly connected, they create a rigid frame capable of distributing loads through the building. RCC also generally retains more structural strength after becoming wet than untreated timber, mud walls or poorly bonded masonry. Openings on the ground floor may have allowed some water to pass through, reducing pressure against solid walls. The survival of the house therefore demonstrates the possible value of robust structural design, but not a universal formula.
