Description: UAE Discusses BrahMos Purchase as Indian Missile Exports Expand India is holding preliminary discussions with the United Arab Emirates over the possible sale of BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles, according to recent reports. The talks reflect the UAE’s efforts to strengthen its military capabilities and diversify defence purchases beyond traditional Western suppliers. The UAE is reportedly also examining India’s Akashteer air-defence command-and-control system. BrahMos can travel at nearly three times the speed of sound and can be launched from land, ships, aircraft and submarines, depending on the version. Its combination of speed, accuracy and low-altitude flight makes interception difficult. For the UAE, such missiles could strengthen coastal defence and protect strategically important maritime routes, including approaches to the Strait of Hormuz. India’s BrahMos export programme began with the Philippines, which signed a contract worth approximately $375 million in 2022 for shore-based anti-ship missile batteries. Deliveries began in 2024. Indonesia and Vietnam subsequently advanced their own BrahMos procurement plans. Recent reports indicate that agreements with both countries have moved forward, although complete information about quantities, prices and delivery schedules has not been publicly disclosed. Indonesia had earlier evaluated shore- and ship-launched versions, while Vietnam has long considered the system for coastal defence. The growing international interest is significant for India, which is seeking to become a major defence exporter rather than remaining largely dependent on foreign weapons. A successful UAE deal would give BrahMos its first major customer in West Asia and represent an important expansion of India’s strategic and defence relationship with the Gulf region.
