Description: India Expands Autonomous-Ship Ambitions as Matangi Returns to Spotlight India’s growing focus on autonomous maritime technology has attracted renewed attention after videos of the unmanned surface vessel Matangi resurfaced online. Matangiis a 13-metre autonomous vessel developed by Indian startup Sagar Defence Engineering. It was demonstrated for the Indian Navy under the Sagarmala Parikrama initiative. The vessel completed an approximately 1,500-kilometre, or 850-nautical-mile, journey from Mumbai to Thoothukudi in 2024. It navigated the route without a crew physically aboard, using onboard sensors, cameras, navigation systems and autonomous-control software. Its achievement was demonstrating that an Indian-built vessel could undertake a long coastal transit without an onboard captain and crew. Autonomous surface vessels could strengthen India’s maritime capabilities by conducting coastal patrols, surveillance, reconnaissance, hydrographic surveys and environmental monitoring. Military versions may also inspect dangerous areas, detect mines or monitor suspicious boats without exposing sailors to immediate risk. Commercially, similar technology could eventually reduce operating costs, support port management and improve cargo movement. Autonomous vessels may also operate for longer periods because they require less accommodation, food and life-support infrastructure. Subscribe to FactTechz
