The official is Siddharth Babu, a 36-year-old Indian Foreign Service officer who was assisting Modi during his interaction with the Chinese president. His knowledge of Mandarin allowed him to help the leaders communicate accurately during the high-profile diplomatic exchange. Babu belongs to the 2017 batch of the IFS and currently serves as a deputy secretary in the East Asia Division of the Ministry of External Affairs. The division manages India’s diplomatic relations with China, Japan, South Korea and North Korea. Originally from Kaloor in Kochi, Kerala, Babu completed a mechanical-engineering degree in 2012. He later worked for an e-commerce company before preparing for the Civil Services Examination. After failing to qualify on his first attempt, he secured All India Rank 15 in the examination and selected the Foreign Service. Babu chose Mandarin as his compulsory foreign language during diplomatic training. He subsequently spent four years at the Indian Embassy in Beijing between 2018 and 2022, serving first as third secretary and later as second secretary. He also completed a master’s programme in Chinese-English translation and interpretation at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies in Monterey, California. He returned to the Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi in 2024. His appearance beside three powerful world leaders has highlighted the largely unseen role played by interpreters and career diplomats.
