Description: Most of Mizoram Received Practical Railway Access Only in 2025 Railway expansion in Mizoram is gathering attention after the opening of the 51.38-kilometre Bairabi–Sairang line in September 2025. The project brought trains to Sairang, around 15 kilometres from Aizawl, making rail travel practically accessible to the state’s largest population centre and a much wider section of its residents. 2025 was the year a large share of Mizoram finally received meaningful access to India’s railway system. Direct services from Sairang now connect the region with Delhi, Kolkata and Guwahati. The late arrival has also attracted criticism. India operates one of the world’s largest railway networks, yet most residents of an entire northeastern state had to wait until 2025 for a reasonably accessible connection. The situation reflects the longstanding infrastructure imbalance between northeastern India and other regions. Construction was undeniably difficult. The mountainous route required 48 tunnels, 55 major bridges and 87 smaller bridges. Heavy rainfall, unstable slopes and restricted working space also complicated the project. Authorities are now considering further expansion from Sairang towards southern Mizoram and the India–Myanmar border. A proposed 223-kilometre route to Hmawngbuchhuah could eventually support regional trade and the Kaladan transport corridor. The Sairang connection is therefore both an engineering achievement and a reminder of how slowly modern railway access reached much of Mizoram. Subscribe to FactTechz
