Description: Why India Is Testing Hydrogen Trains Despite Germany’s Problems India’s newly launched hydrogen train has triggered debate, with critics questioning why public money is being spent on technology that has faced high costs and reliability problems in Germany. The comparison, however, requires context. Germany has not completely banned hydrogen trains. The state of Baden-Württemberg decided against them after concluding that battery-electric and conventional electric options would be substantially cheaper over their operating lives. Hydrogen trains deployed elsewhere in Germany have also experienced fuel-supply and maintenance difficulties. Nevertheless, some German hydrogen projects remain active. India’s circumstances are different, but the case for hydrogen is still not automatic. Approximately 99.2% of Indian Railways’ broad-gauge network had been electrified by November 2025. On these wired routes, conventional electric trains are generally more efficient because electricity powers them directly, while green hydrogen must first be produced, compressed, transported and converted back into electricity. The hydrogen train is therefore a pilot—not a proposed replacement for India’s entire electric fleet. It was introduced on the Jind–Sonipat section in Haryana to test domestically developed fuel-cell technology, refuelling infrastructure, reliability and operating costs. The train has ten coaches, can carry approximately 2,600 passengers and produces water vapour as its direct exhaust. Indian Railways is also examining hydrogen propulsion for heritage and mountain networks such as Kalka–Shimla, where installing or modifying overhead wires can be technically difficult and may affect historic infrastructure. However, it is inaccurate to say hydrogen has already been approved exclusively for the remaining “one-percent hilly network.” Future deployment will depend on whether trials prove it safer, cleaner and economically preferable to batteries, electrification or improved diesel alternatives.
