Description: Buried Underwear Soil Experiment Wins 2026 Ig Nobel Prize A European research team has received the 2026 Ig Nobel Prize for Soil Science after using buried cotton underwear to measure biological activity beneath the ground. The award went to Franz Bender, Marcel van der Heijden, Atlant Bieri and Pia Viviani. Their citizen-science project asked participants to bury standard white cotton underpants in gardens, agricultural fields and grasslands before digging them up approximately two months later. The method works because cotton is largely composed of cellulose. Bacteria, fungi and other soil organisms consume and break down this natural material. In biologically active soil, much of the cotton disappears, frequently leaving only the synthetic waistband and stitching. Underwear that remains comparatively intact can indicate lower decomposition activity. The original Swiss project recruited around 1,000 participants, who buried more than 2,000 pairs of underwear and thousands of tea bags. The wider initiative subsequently involved participants in more than 25 countries. Researchers photographed and analysed the recovered garments to create an “underpants index” of decomposition. Private gardens generally recorded high activity because they often contained organic matter and diverse soil organisms. Intensively maintained grass lawns showed comparatively low decomposition. However, scientists cautioned that faster decay does not automatically mean an ecosystem is healthier. Extremely rapid decomposition can indicate excessive nutrient levels, which may benefit crop production but disturb some natural environments. The Ig Nobel Prizes celebrate genuine research that first makes people laugh and then encourages them to think. They are organised by the Annals of Improbable Research and are separate from the Nobel Prizes. Behind the humorous image of scientists examining dirty underwear, the experiment offered an inexpensive and easily understood way to involve the public in studying soil biodiversity, fertility and land-management practices.
