Description: A Meerut court on October 14 sentenced Muskan Rastogi and Sahil Shukla to death for the murder of Muskan’s husband, Saurabh Rajput, in the widely reported “blue drum” case. District and Sessions Judge Arvind Kumar Mishra pronounced the punishment after convicting both on September 30 of murder and destruction of evidence. The case emerged in March 2025 after Rajput’s remains were discovered concealed inside a cement-filled blue plastic drum at his Meerut residence. Investigators said Muskan and Sahil travelled to Himachal Pradesh after the killing, leaving the drum behind. The prosecution relied on forensic findings, call records, CCTV footage and witness testimony. Those examined included family members, a cab driver and shopkeepers connected to purchases linked to the crime. Reports state that the proceedings involved 126 hearings and 22 prosecution witnesses. Prosecutors sought capital punishment, arguing that the circumstances placed the murder in the “rarest of the rare” category. Both convicts appeared before the court through video conferencing from jail. Rajput’s mother, Renu Devi, who had sought the death penalty, welcomed the sentencing decision. The sentence does not mean an immediate execution. A death sentence imposed by a sessions court must be submitted to the High Court for confirmation. In this case, that responsibility rests with the Allahabad High Court. The High Court can confirm the punishment, impose another legally permissible sentence or overturn the conviction, depending on its examination of the case. The October 14 ruling therefore marks the trial court’s sentencing decision, with further judicial scrutiny still required. Subscribe to FactTechz
