Sharing the figures on October 21, the Railway Ministry said claims circulating online about deteriorating performance overlooked important differences in operating conditions. The latest percentage is higher than the pre-pandemic figure cited by the ministry, but slightly below the 77.43% recorded for the full 2025–26 financial year. Because the current figure covers only part of the year, it should not be presented as a final annual result or an uninterrupted improvement every year. Railways also cautioned against directly comparing normal operations with the unusually high punctuality recorded during the pandemic. Far fewer trains operated in 2020–21 and 2021–22, reducing traffic pressure and making those years an unsuitable benchmark for today’s network. The measurement itself matters for passengers. Railway punctuality is assessed at the destination station, based on arrival within a specified time allowance after the scheduled time. It therefore does not mean that every intermediate stop was reached exactly on schedule. Officials attribute improvements to closer monitoring, timetable changes, maintenance planning and infrastructure upgrades. However, congestion remains a challenge because passenger services, freight trains and other movements often share tracks. Fog, equipment maintenance and unexpected obstructions can also disrupt schedules. For Indian travellers, the national average provides useful context, but individual routes can perform differently.
