Description: Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has offered a closer look at India’s indigenous B28 high-speed train, currently being manufactured at BEML’s Aditya facility in Bengaluru. During his November 1 visit, the minister reviewed production and shared footage showing how the train is taking shape inside the factory. The B28 is being developed for the Mumbai–Ahmedabad high-speed rail corridor. Its specifications include an operational speed of 249 kmph and a maximum test speed of 280 kmph, marking a significant step in India’s domestic railway manufacturing capabilities. Vaishnaw inspected several stages of construction, including the underframe, sidewalls, roof and complete coach-body assembly. He also examined passenger seats, air-conditioning equipment and couplers, which connect the coaches. A highlight was the “squeeze test,” where controlled forces are applied to the train’s body to assess its structural strength, rigidity and ability to retain its shape. Such checks form part of the quality-assurance process required before high-speed passenger operations. The planned eight-coach train will accommodate approximately 557 passengers, with Standard and Executive Class seating. Noise-reduction measures and an aerodynamic design are intended to improve comfort during high-speed journeys. BEML is developing two trainsets, with the first expected in early 2027. Testing and trial runs will follow before clearance for commercial service. The factory update therefore shows manufacturing progress rather than a passenger-service launch. For Indian Railways, the project represents an effort to develop high-speed train engineering within the country. Its wider significance lies in building manufacturing expertise, strengthening domestic suppliers and creating capabilities that could support future rail projects. Subscribe to FactTechz
