Description: India is preparing to test polymer banknotes in ₹10 and ₹20 denominations, with the government approving field trials involving 100 crore notes of each denomination. RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra has indicated a target of introducing the pilot around the beginning of the next financial year, subject to preparations and testing. Recent reports suggest the RBI plans to retain the dimensions of existing notes to reduce the cost of adapting cash-handling infrastructure. The proposed April 2027 timing and unchanged dimensions have been reported through sources; the dimensions were not independently confirmed by an RBI announcement in that coverage. The practical challenge involves ATM cassettes—the compartments that hold banknotes before dispensing. Changes in note size can require adjustments to these compartments, sensors and machine settings. Retaining familiar dimensions could reduce that work, although the different material would still need compatibility testing. The initial small-denomination trial could also use bank branches for distribution. Polymer notes use a plastic-based material designed for greater durability. For frequently exchanged ₹10 and ₹20 notes, a longer usable life could reduce replacement requirements and improve the condition of cash circulating through shops, markets and public transport. The field trials will assess performance under Indian weather, handling and infrastructure conditions before wider issuance is considered. This makes the exercise a test of everyday practicality as well as production capability. Existing paper notes are not being withdrawn under this proposal. The government has stated that polymer notes would circulate alongside paper currency, with no current plan to replace paper banknotes entirely. Subscribe to FactTechz
